Remembering Srebrenica joins the mothers and survivors to condemn the denial of genocide and glorification of perpetrators by the newly elected Bosnian Serb mayor of Srebrenica, Mladen Grujičić.
Two courts, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) have ruled that genocide was committed in Srebrenica.
The Chairman of Remembering Srebrenica, Dr Waqar Azmi OBE said:
“It is a cruel irony that the election of a new Mayor of Srebrenica, who is a genocide denier, was made possible only because of the ethnic cleansing of its Muslim population. His support for convicted genocide perpetrator Radovan Karadžić is deeply disturbing and we condemn it in the strongest terms”.
“Twenty one years after the worst atrocity in Europe since The Holocaust, healing and reconciliation is still much needed in Srebrenica. Instead wounds are being re-opened. The international community must condemn the Mayor’s denial of genocide and raising of ethnic tensions in a place which has already borne such tragic consequences”, he said.
Grujičić denies that the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague has ever proved the massacre was genocide. “When they prove it to be the truth, I’ll be the first to accept it,” he said.
Remembering Srebrenica is calling on the international community to closely monitor the situation and ensure that Mr Grujičić is truly a Mayor for everybody.
