“The theme for Remembering Srebrenica this year is ’21; Coming of age – Time to Act’. It is 21 years since the genocide in Srebrenica – the single greatest atrocity committed on European soil since the Second World War. But as the charity reminds us it is also time to act. We must never forget the lessons from Srebrenica. Schools should be places where young people can discuss events in a spirit of enquiry and openness. This is the way to promote respect, understanding and the value of peace.
That is why the National Union of Teachers, with others, has campaigned tirelessly for decades for justice for all. I hope that the message from Srebrenica Memorial Day will go far and wide and help make a safe and better society for all.”
