Tobias Ellwood, MP for Bournemouth East, reflects on his visit to Srebrenica.
“As a soldier posted to Bosnia in 1995, I was of course aware of the horrific events which took place in and around Srebrenica during that summer. It was not until I visited the Memorial and Cemetery did I appreciate how little the international community did to intervene in the lead up to such a despicable event which no one could ever have thought would take place in Europe.
Sadly, even today, more bodies continue to be discovered in mass graves but incredible efforts are made to identify who they were so they can finally be buried with respect along with the other genocide victims who were killed for no other reason than who they were.”
