Manchester Cathedral hosted a service to mark the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide on 10th July 2025. The event, organised by Remembering Srebrenica North West, included participation from civic and interfaith leaders, as well as survivors of the genocide.
Co-Chair of the NW Board Yusuf Tai hosted the evening. Neil Sledge, his Co-Chair, sang two songs, including the first ever public performance of Sarajevo Rose, written especially for the 30th Anniversary. Dawn Taylor from the National Education Union spoke about her recent trip to Bosnia. We also heard from young people from Lostock High School and the Bosnian School who had been working with writer Nik Perring, Azra spoke about her family’s journey from Prijedor to Manchester, and Ennis Mumnovic on his personal journey and the Bosnian School of Manchester’s 25 years.
We were delighted to also receive civic guests including the Mayors of Salford, Bury, Oldham, the Deputy Lord Mayor of Manchester and the Deputy Mayor of Trafford.
Thanks must go to the organisers from the Board, Bosnian school and Manchester Cathedral staff and Dean of Manchester Cathedral Rogers Govender MBE.
It was a very moving and special occasion appreciated by all, especially those from the Bosnian community in attendance.
