An Academi Heddwch Cymru and Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod event
Academi Heddwch Cymru (Wales’ Peace Academy) and the Llangollen Eisteddfod have partnered with Remembering Srebrenica Wales for a very special memorial event to commemorate the survivors and victims of the Srebrenica genocide.
On 11 July 1995, Bosnian Serb forces, driven by an ideology of hatred to create an ethnically pure Serb state, entered the UN Safe area of Srebrenica in eastern Bosnian and killed over 8000 mostly Muslim men and boys in five days. The men and boys were murdered and the women sexually violated simply because of their religious identity.
The Covid 19 pandemic restrictions last year meant that Remembering Srebrenica Wales had to cancel a prestigious 25th anniversary memorial event with the First Minister of Wales and VIPs in the Senedd and so had to create an alternative online event that would make as much impact for such an anniversary. Wales and Bosnia came together in an extraordinary way to create an online performance of remembrance called ‘White Flower’ and the organisers will create a panel to answer questions about the project and what the performance means for Wales, Bosnia and the message of global peace.
The panel will include the following speakers:
Abi Carter: Co-Chair of Remembering Srebrenica Wales and Director of Forensic Resources Ltd, Cardiff
Elvir Solak: Professional musician and singer in the Sarajevo National Theatre opera chorus and composer of White Flower
David Leggett: Music Director of Cardiff Ardwyn Singers and Head of Music at Cardiff High School, and arranger of White Flower
Professor Mererid Hopwood: Chair of the Welsh and Celtic Studies department at Aberystwyth University
Join us to hear the beautiful performance of ‘White Flower’ and learn from the creators about its significance and impact on human rights education across the world and about what happened in Bosnia & Herzegovina only 26 years ago.
